One of the most interesting and important match ups this Sunday features the Seattle Seahawks going to Charlotte to play the Panthers this Sunday.

This game has major playoff implications for who will be the two wild card teams in the NFC.  The Panthers (6-4) are coming off a disappointing loss to the Detroit Lions where Cam Newton missed a throw on a 2 point conversion to win the game, and the week before, they were blown out by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football.

Last week, Cam Newton threw for 357 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception yet he missed the biggest throw of the game on that 2 point conversion.  Christian McCaffrey led the rush on 53 yards. DJ Moore was the lead receiver for the Panthers on 157 yards and a touchdown.  Carolina still sits firmly in the playoffs at the moment (currently the number 5 seed) but they need to get back on the right track quickly.

Seattle, on the other hand, is coming off a really good win against the Green Bay Packers.  Russell Wilson hasn’t put up gaudy passing yardage numbers this year (he only threw for 225 last week with 2 touchdowns) but that is because the Seahawks have gone back to having one of the best running games in football.  Chris Carson led the rush on 83 yards and a score while rookie Richard Penny was impressive as well.  Both Tyler Lockett and Doug Baldwin were able to make plays down the field and it resulted in Seattle being in the thick of the payoff race.

Both teams are top 15 in DVOA, with Seattle checking in at 12 while Carolina is at 15.  This should be an excellent game Sunday.

Both teams really need this game as it looks like 10 wins is going to be the minimum number of wins to get in to the playoffs in the NFC as a wild card.  The Panthers have really struggled the last two weeks, and while Seattle is currently a .500 team, they have played really good football of late.  They had every opportunity to beat the Rams two weeks ago and won last Thursday against Green Bay.  The Panthers obviously can not say the same, but since they came out of the gates super hot, they have given themselves a little cushion in the playoff picture.

Both quarterbacks are excellent, both teams have defenses that are very capable of playing well.  Christian McCaffery is the best running back in this game, but Seattle’s run game as a whole is better than Carolina’s.  I think that will be the difference on Sunday; that and Seattle needs this game a little bit more.  If Carolina misses out on the playoffs, they could point to losing to Detroit last week as the reason why.

The Pick: Seattle +3
