ESPN NCAA Basketball Picks South Carolina Gamecocks vs Kentucky Wildcats
Another SEC matchup comes to Rupp Arena Tuesday night. The South Carolina Gamecocks travel to Lexington to try and upset the #5 Kentucky Wildcats. The Cats have been on a tear lately and look to continue their streak of eight straight wins to nine.
The Kentucky Wildcats last game was huge. Facing an 11 point deficit with less than 10 minutes to go in the game, the Cats were outmatched. The Gators were controlling the game and looking to put John Calipari’s team away. That is until PJ Washington stepped up and got his team back on track. The Wildcats went on a couple of huge runs to WIN by 11 points by the time the final horn sounded. 65-54. They showed why they are one of the hottest teams in the country since the New Year. The adversity they faced in Gainesville will go a long way come tournament time in March.
The Wildcats have been led all year in scoring by Keldon Johnson, but the real story in SEC play has been the scoring of his teammates. The best part about John Calipari’s team is the top four scorers are averaging between 12 and 14.2PPG. As a team, they are averaging 79.2PPG on 48.1% shooting from the field, 35.7% from three, and are pulling down an impressive 38.7RPG. Those numbers are good enough for 40th, 27th, 96th, and 37th in the nation. KenPom is big on Kentucky, 8th overall with the 17th best offense and 8th best defense in the country. That defense has won them many games since the New Year.
The South Carolina Gamecocks began the season on shaky ground. The Gamecocks have losses to Stony Brook, Wyoming, and Wofford in the out of conference slate. These games are really bad on their resume, but Frank Martin’s team is head-scratching. They have taken out Mississippi State, Auburn, and won at Florida. They really aren’t that good, but they have been able to challenge good teams at times this season. Will they be able to bring that fire and play to Lexington? We shall see.
The Gamecocks, of course, have a great coach in Frank Martin. Chris Silva is their top scorer and rebounder. The forward is averaging 14.1PPG and 7RPG. A.J. Lawson compliments Silva from the backcourt. The guard has been putting together a decent season, and the only thing that is lacking would be efficiency in his shooting. He gets points, 13.2 per game, but only on 39.4FG%, 66.7FT%, and 30.8% from three. As a team, the Gamecocks are averaging 75.2PPG, on 43.2% from the field, only 32.8% from three, and 36.8RPG. Only their rebounding numbers crack the top-100. KenPom has not been kind to South Carolina. They are rated 102nd overall, 91st in offensive rating, and 122nd in defense. Things don’t look good for the Gamecocks.

ESPN SCORES NCAA Basketball Picks Kentucky Wildcats vs South Carolina Gamecocks
Kentucky has been on a streak the last eight games. They have covered the spread in six straight games and show no sign of slowing up. You have to imagine the Cats are going to play well in Rupp Arena. However, the Gamecocks have shown that they have the ability to play up for a game against good teams. That is all but elite teams such as Michigan and Tennessee. They both beat South Carolina by double digits. Kentucky is definitely ELITE. The spread opened at Kentucky -18 and has moved down to -15.5. That is a lot of points. However, South Carolina’s awful offense and defense will be their downfall and the Cats should roll in this game.
