The Carolina Panthers are travelling to Washington to take on the Redskins. Cam Newton and the Panthers have won 5 in a row against the Redskins but are looking to pick up their first road win of the season. The Redskins are coming off a Monday Night massacre, where they lost to the Saints 41-19. The Panthers are coming off of a miracle win against the Giants, where they needed an NFL tying-record FG goal by Graham Gano to win the game 33-31.

Cam Newton has started the year on the right foot, throwing for nearly 900 yards through 4 games, passing for 7 TDs and rushing for 3 more. His duel threat capabilities are mix quite well with second-year man Christian McCaffrey. Despite having a 5.2 yard per carry throughout the year, McCaffrey is yet score a rushing TD this year, but has proved equally as valuable as a receiver, leading the team in receptions and targets. The rest of the passing game has been spread around, with 7 different Carolina Panthers finding the end zone through the air. Devin Funchess leads the group with 238 yards on 18 receptions and a score. His ability to be a deep ball threat, 4 catches of 20+ yards this year, stretch the field and open up a lot of running holes as well as screens and short passes for Newton. This combination has worked well, with Carolina averaging just under 30 points a game over their last 3 contests. Carolina’s defense has been stopping the run so far, allowing just 95 yards per game, but has not been as staunch in the passing game, giving up 280 yards. Fortunately, they have been able to make big plays with 9 takeaways so far this year.

The Redskins have had an up and down season to say the least. After cruising to a 24-6 victory over the NFC doormat Cardinals, they lost to the Colts at home, soundly beat the Packers, then got absolutely demolished by Drew Brees and his record setting right arm. Alex Smith, in typical Alex Smith fashion, has just been OK this year, passing the 1000 yard mark but only throwing 4 TDs to his 2 INTs. Adrian Peterson has been a nice surprise for the Redskins, reaching the end zone three times on the ground this year. As of now, Peterson is listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup. Chris Thompson, the team’s second leading rusher and top receiver, is also listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup. If these two can’t go, it could be a long day as the running game is unlikely to gain traction. Washington’s defense performed quite well this year, having the fifth best yards per game in the whole league. They crumbled last week against the top rated Saints, but have otherwise performed very well this year.

FREE NFL Football Pick: Washington Redskins vs. Carolina Panthers

With a stout defense that has something to prove, look for the Redskins to keep the Panthers offensive attack in check. Josh Norman, trying to reclaim his Hollywood Status, with keep Funchess from getting the long ball and negating any big play potential. On the other hand, it looks like Alex Smith may be without a strong backfield companion with an offense that could be considered mild to only the spicy-intolerant. Look for this game to be a lower scoring affair.
