Montreal finishes up a three game Southern California trip with a visit to the Honda Center to take on the Ducks. Their last showing resulted in a 5-2 loss against San Jose, a place the Canadiens haven’t won this century. Montreal allowed 5 goals on only 25 shots as backup Anti Niemi struggled heavily. Anaheim’s last game was a 5-4 loss to the Blues where they allowed two goals in a :12 second span during the final minute of the game. The loss was heartbreaking for the players but ultimately does more for the team in the long term, helping them hold better odds at a top draft pick.

Anaheim Ducks

The sporadic ending in St. Louis stifled what would have been the Ducks third straight win, all against teams fighting for their playoff lives, an impressive run for a squad with an interim coach and deep lack of talent this late in the season. Again, it does more benefit to the future if they lose more but Anaheim is not taking on that approach, letting John Gibson keep them in games even after he missed a couple weeks with an injury and could have been shut down.

The Ducks scoring woes are still very present but they surprisingly have a strong resume against Carey Price, going 6-3 against the Hab’s tendy in his career. Anaheim also posts there positive goal differential during the first period at home, giving them a chance as the Canadiens are 2-7-1 when trailing after the first.

Montreal Canadiens

The Candiens currently sit in the last eastern wild card spot and every game is crucial at this stanchion of the year. The loss to the Sharks is excusable seeing as they haven’t won there in 20 years and San Jose is among the NHL’s elite, but the Habs must take care of business against the bottom feeders. They have been very inconsistent this last month, following every winning stretch with consecutive losses and being unable to keep their scoring steady. Since an 8 goal outburst in Detroit they have managed just 9 non-empty net goals in 4 games.

Goalie Carey Price is looking for career win 315 to take sole possession of 1st place in Montreal’s long history and surpass Jacques Plante. Price appeared in 15 straight games before finally getting a break last night. Leading scorer Max Domi has put up just one point in the last 4 contests after a period of 10 points in 6, including a 5 point performance against the Red Wings.

There is a lot of importance to this game for Montreal so I do not expect them to take the Ducks lightly, especially with such a shining record on the line for their goalie. The Canadiens have also done a fine job holding bad teams to low outputs, allowing 2 or less goals in their last five match-ups against bottom 10 teams. The Duck’s have been an under machine this year and I find it hard to believe they ill be able to crack an actually rested Carey Price. The Canadiens should control this one.

PICK: Under 5.5
