The Ducks look to play spoiler and prolong their distant playoff chances as they host Winnipeg tonight. Anaheim.had a couple days off following their 3-2 victory over the Panthers that saw Jakob Silfverburg score the game winner with under five minutes left in the game. The Ducks didn’t eclipse 10 shots in any period and goalie John Gibson came up big, making 39 saves on 41 shots. The Jets were in L.A. on Monday and downed the Kings 3-2 as well, also breaking the tie late in the third. The Jets shut the Kings down, holding them to a lowly 2 shots in the third period. Both teams are 6-4 in their last 10 and come in with small winning streaks.

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks play of late has been impressive, they have beaten many playoff hopefuls such as Arizona, Florida, Colorado (2x) and a massacre of the Cnadiens 8-2. Anaheim’s forward group has stepped up, with Jakob Silfverburg potting goals in four of the last five games and collecting 10 points in 9 games. Captain and center Ryan Getzlaf has 5 points in his last 4 in what has been a disappointing season for him overall. Goalie John Gibson gets the start in net tonight and comes in having won four straight and five out of 6 after a slump of 6 straight losses. Gibson has faced the sixth most shots this year despite playing in fewer game than the five net-minders ahead of him.

Anaheim is loosely in the playoff race and their odds get dimmer by the day. A loss tonight would leave them 9 points back of Arizona with two more games played.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets continue to hold the first spot in their division over Nashville and a three game win streak as well as a big win over conference-leading Calgary has them playing strong hockey at the best tie of year. In fact, this month Winnipeg has only lost to division leaders in the Caps, Lightning and Sharks, and five of their six wins have come versus current playoff teams. Special teams have been a big proponent of their recent success as the Jets are 4/8 on the power-play in the last four games while killing off 7/8 penalties in that same stretch.

Winger Blake Wheeler has been on an absolute tear, racking up 20 points in 13 games, only being held off the stat sheet in one of those games.Wheeler has broken into the top 10 in NHL scoring  currently ranking eighth with 88 points and closing in on his career high of 91 which he set last season.

FREE NHL Prediction Winnipeg Jets vs Anaheim Ducks

This game is a lot more of a toss up than one would think looking at the teams point totals and Anaheim has been better at home lately while the Jets have been inconsistent when traveling to play. The last time these teams met, Winnipeg exploded for a 9-3 victory but the Ducks were a different team then so I would not expect that result to hold much weight in determining tonight’s outcome. Anaheim has only allowed more than three goals twice this month in ten games played but have not played a team as offensively gifted as the Jets. I don’t often pick upsets but I like the way Anaheim has been playing and I think they continue their spoiler role.
