FREE NHL Pick: Winnipeg Jets vs. Arizona Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes and Winnipeg Jets will clash Saturday night in Arizona in the final regular season game for both the Jets and Coyotes. Winnipeg clinched a spot in the playoffs last week, while Arizona was officially eliminated after the Colorado Avalanche victory over Winnipeg on Thursday.

Winnipeg Jets

Though the Jets have already secured their spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs, they still have a lot to play for in their regular season finale. The Jets are one point behind current Central Division leader Nashville (who also has one game remaining), meaning with a win or an OT loss and a Nashville loss, Winnipeg would clinch the division and the #2 overall seed in the West. This would be a great advantage for Winnipeg in the playoffs as a home ice advantage, where the Jets are much more difficult to beat (just look at their 25-12-4 record at home, vs their 21-18-1 on the road). For a team like Winnipeg, home ice advantage could determine just how far this team is able to go in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Winnipeg has slowed down substantially over the last month of the season, going just 9-10-1 in their last 20 since the beginning of March. Their once potent offense is not scoring with the efficiency that it started out the season with, as they’ve scored 3+ goals only 9 times in their last 20, and just once since March 24th. Their regular season finale with the division potentially on the line could and should be the shot this team needs to heat the sticks up and find their groove again on offense. If any team is capable of striking while the iron is hot, its this one, with 5 skaters scoring 20+ goals this season, 3 of them eclipsing the 30 goal mark.

Arizona Coyotes

The Coyotes and their fans are no doubt disappointed that their team once again will miss the playoffs, but this turnaround season is nothing short of a resounding success for the franchise. Before the season began, CBS listed Arizona as having the second-worst odds of winning the Stanley cup at 80-1, ranking above only the last-place Ottawa Senators. To be in the playoff hunt into April is a credit to the unexpected run this team had in 2019. Without a true star player, Arizona has relied on their young players to step up this season and they answered the call, as only 2 of their top 15 skaters are older than 30. Goaltending was another bright spot for the ‘Yotes this season, as Darcy Kuemper put together his best season so far in the NHL, going 27-20-8 as a starter with a 2.33 GAA and .925 SV%. The Coyotes come into this game having gone 3-1-1 in their last 5 and, although their season will end tonight, the future looks like its trending upward for Arizona.

ESPN NHL Scores Arizona Coyotes vs. Winnipeg Jets

Winnipeg comes into their regular season finale as a slight favorite over Arizona in my mind, but with so much on the line, this is not a game that the Jets can take lightly. Though the Coyotes are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, they’d love to reach the 40 win mark by playing spoiler to Jets hopes of winning the division. The money is going in Winnipeg’s direction and although I have the Jets winning 4-2, this is a game I would not be shocked if it ends up being a little more high scoring. The Jets and Coyotes are two of the streakier teams in the NHL and both would love to close out the regular season with some offensive momentum. Even though the Jets aren’t the same team on the road as the are at home, with the division on the line, coupled with Arizona’s disappointment at being eliminated from the postseason, Winnipeg will do enough to win straight up.

Pick: Winnipeg -135
