Welcome to this Metropolitan Division matchup between the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers. The Canes are having a nice season. They are fifth in the division, but a mini winning streak can put them in second place easily. They are also second in goals scored in the division and 6-3-1 in their last ten games. Lately, Carolina has had a lot of high scoring games and one or two bad goaltending games. Overall, they have been playing pretty steady. Sebastian Aho leads the team in goals scored with 21. The Rangers are having an okay season. They are slowly sliding down to the cellar of the division, but you still never know what can happen. New York has the second worst goals against in the division and third worst plus/minus at -4. The Rangers are 4-5-1 in their last ten games. Lately, they have given up a lot of goals, but sometimes respond with a blowout win. Artemi Panarin leads the team in goals, assists, and points. The starting goalies for this game are James Reimer for Carolina and Henrik Lundqvist for New York.

The Hurricanes are coming off of a crazy, 8-6 loss, to the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was kind of a back and forth type of game. Carolina actually had a 5-3 lead going into the third period, and they ended up getting outscored 5-1. The Hurricanes owned in the hits department and won that statistic 19-4. They did well in getting takeaways and even blocked some shots. After playing well for two periods with zone time and puck possession, the Canes just didn’t have the same push in the third. The starting goalie, Petr Mrazek, was pulled in the third and Reimer could only manage to save four of seven shots on net. It was a mix of bad goaltending and sloppy play by the back end defenders. Carolina will try to do better on the penalty kill and get back to that solid defense, that is usually there for them in every period, especially when they control games.

The Rangers are coming off of an ugly, 5-1 loss, to the Philadelphia Flyers. New York had some good hits and they took care of the puck. Faceoffs were pretty even, but the six penalties really took them out of their rhythm offensively. They did well in killing five of the six penalties, but all of that time shorthanded can be tiring and then you just keep playing on your heels. The shot total was nice, but they couldn’t come through in some quality chances. New York’s overall play was bad in the third and they were outscored 4-0. 13 skaters ended up with negative points and the Flyers only had one skater with a negative total. When a mix of core guys and most of the defensemen end up with some bad minus games, then its no surprise that the team got blownout. This team has plenty of guys who can pick up assists, they just need to find a way to get more quality chances in and finish stronger.

So, who will win this east coast matchup, between two teams that are looking to clean up their previous third period play? The Hurricanes have been playing pretty well on the road and they probably just went through a hiccup last game. These teams have the same amount of depth scoring, but Carolina is way better on the power play. The Hurricanes have been finding the net with ease, while the Rangers consistency score a little, or give up a lot. Reimer has hardly had a bad start this season and King Henrik has been slightly back and forth with his starts. These teams like to play physical and look for some tighter defense at times. The third period should be cleaned up, but by then, it will be all Canes. Hurricanes win 4-1.
