NHL Picks and Parlays Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes will play against the Washington Capitals in the 1st round of the playoffs. They enter this series against the Capitals on a strong note as they are enjoying a three-game winning streak including dominant wins against the New Jersey Devils and the Toronto Maple Leafs. What’s important to note within this three-game winning streak is that the Hurricanes have put up 3+ goals in these games which is slightly above their season average of 2.96 goals/game. It will be interesting to see if the Hurricanes will be able to keep this pace against the Capitals as the playoffs progress. The strength of the Hurricanes has been on the defensive end as they were 7th in goals against and 8th in penalty kill percentage.

The Hurricanes’ opponent, the Washington Capitals’ strength is the opposite of the Hurricanes. With that being said, the Hurricanes defense will be continually tested against the offensive firepower of the Washington Capitals, fueled by team leader Alex Ovechkin. Fortunately, the Hurricanes have a very healthy roster as they only have Centre Lars Eller and Defenseman Michal Kempny out with injuries. On paper, the Hurricanes are the inferior team; they have a lesser record and they are in the Wild Card while the Capitals are leading their division. Because of their potential uphill battle, the Hurricanes are going to need as much manpower as they can get as well as the complete focus of their team. Game 1 will determine the pace of the series, so it will be important for the Hurricanes to make a strong statement.

Washington Capitals

The Capitals are heading into the playoffs looking to defend their Stanley Cup Championship. The reigning defending champions had a great season; they finished with a season record of 48-26-8 and with 104 points which catapulted them to the top of the Metropolitan Division. The Capitals have a dangerous offense as they are ranked as the 5th best scoring offense led by Alex Ovechkin who is leading the league in goals/game as he has produced a gaudy 51 goals. The Capitals are going to have to continue relying on his hot hand in the playoffs for them to keep their scoring pace and come closer to closer to repeating as champions.

Looking into their playoff series against the Hurricanes, the Capitals cannot take the Hurricanes lightly. The Hurricanes are making the playoffs for the first time after nine seasons so they will be taking the most of their opportunity and coming at the Capitals with everything they have. Especially because this season the Capitals are 4-0 against the Hurricanes so the Hurricanes will be extra motivated to turn the tide in their matchup against the Capitals. Despite the great offense of the Capitals, their goalie Braden Holtby may be the key piece to the Capitals success. He ended the season in a strong way and averaged a 92% saving percentage in the last few games of the season. His play could be the key to being repeat champions for the Capitals.
