The Avalanche and Sabres both roll into Buffalo with a 2-1-0 record looking to continue a solid start to the season. Colorado finished with 95 points last season. This was enough to put them in the playoffs before they were knocked out by the Nashville Predators in six games. Buffalo finished with the worst record in the NHL last season (62 points) and are hoping to avoid that embarrassment again this season.
After winning their first two home matches against the Wild and Flyers respectively, the Colorado Avalanche dropped their opening road test 5-2 to the Blue Jackets. The Avalanche got off to a bad start by giving up two goals in the first period before Nathan MacKinnon and Carl Soderberg helped tie things up in the second period. However, the Blue Jackets, led by captain Nick Foligno ran away with the game by scoring three goals in the final period to take the win.
It’s important to note Gabriel Landeskog isn’t back at 100% yet for the Avalanche due to a lingering lower body injury. However, Nathan MacKinnon has already started the season off with a bang. After finishing last season with 39 goals and a total of 94 points, MacKinnon has already 3 goals in his first three games this season. Except him to light up the lamp over the next few games.
After losing their opening match to the Bruins, the Buffalo Sabres got back on track with a 3-1 win over the Rangers. On Monday, they triumphed 4-2 over the Golden Knights. Jack Eichel scored the first two goals of the game for the Sabres. Marco Scandella and Jason Pominville each scored their first goals of the season 1:28 apart in the second period on route to the victory. Tonight’s game vs Colorado wraps up a four game home-stand for Buffalo before hitting the road to face the Arizona Coyotes.
Keep an eye on Rasmus Dahlin for the Sabres. The Swedish rookie D-man plied his trade at Frolunda before becoming the #1 overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. He also played for Sweden in the 2017 & 2018 World Junior Championships where they finished 4th and 2nd respectively. He also became the youngest player to compete in the men’s hockey tournament when he represented Sweden at the 2018 Summer Olympics.

The over O/U in this game has stayed steady at 6 goals. There are quite a few factors (including the trends you see above) that will make you lean towards betting the OVER in this game. Both the Avalanche and Sabres have hit the over in their first three games this season. Jack Eichel and Nathan MacKinnon are both hitting their stride for their respective teams early in the season.
The goal-tending and defense haven’t been the sharpest for either team in the lead up to this game. The Sabres have given up 11 goals in their first three games so far while the Avalanche gave up 4 goals (plus one empty netter) in their Monday game against the Blue Jackets. I believe the Avalanche and Sabres will both score at least three goals in this Thursday night game.
