Welcome to this Original Six and Atlantic Division matchup between the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. The Red Wings are still in the dark ages and having another rough season. Detroit is the worst team in the league, 1-9 in their last ten games, and an incredible -59 in goal differential. Detroit just ended a 12 game losing streak and maybe they can actually put some wins together. During their losing stretch, the Wings were shutout a few times or managed to score one goal. Tyler Bertuzzi leads the team in points with 25. The Canadiens are having a good season and lately playing some complete hockey. They are third in the division, 4-5-1 in their last ten games, and they have won three games in a row. Montreal is a -1 in goal differential, but their goaltending has been hot. In their last three games, the Canadiens have given up one goal or less in two of those three contests. Tomas Tatar leads the team in points with 28. This should be an interesting game, as the Red Wings try to get something going and Montreal will look to try and continue to play some fine hockey.
The Red Wings are coming off their first win in a month. Detroit beat the Winnipeg Jets at home 5-2. Three skaters had multiple point games and Robby Fabbri led the way with two goals, one assist, three points, and four shots on net. Detroit was more physical, had a nice shot total for once, and actually won the faceoff battle. They even went two for four on the power play and killed off their only penalty in the game. The Wings did give the puck away too much, but other than that, it was their most impressive win of the season. When it comes to plus/minus points, this team is full of negative number, especially with their core players. If this team wants to slowly turn things around, then the top guys need to be better defensively and create more offense. Since almost a quarter of Fabbris shots on net go in the net, he should take more shots and someone needs to take charge on the power play.
The Canadiens are coming off of a 3-2 overtime win over the Ottawa Senators. Montreal scored in the first period, things were scoreless in the second, the Sens outscored them 2-1 in the third, and then the Canadiens scored the golden goal in overtime. Montreal had seven different skaters on the scoresheet and Max Domi led the way with zero goals, two assists, and two points. The Canadiens also like to give the puck away a lot, but they are good at blocking shots and getting in those shooting lanes. They will look to get a shot total against Detroit and hopefully some special teams success. Montreal can be physical at times and they will match the Red Wings hit numbers. This team has pretty decent plus/minus numbers and they really just need to work on their power play production.
NHL Scores Detroit Red Wings vs Montreal Canadiens
So, who will win this matchup between two of the best and oldest franchises in hockey? Even though the Red Wings are having a terrible season, they did manage to beat Detroit in their home opener 4-2. That was awhile ago, but that can give the Red Wings some confidence going into this game. A few weeks ago, the Canadiens were in some high scoring games that they were winning and losing. Things have definitely tightened up as of late. Goaltender Carey Price is started to play like an elite goaltender. Sure the numbers aren’t that pretty yet, but he has been solid lately. Montreal is mostly a defensive team, but they are ninth in the league in team scoring, Also, the Canadiens are starting to get healthy again. With Detroit, they have the worst offense and penalty kill in the league, and they are missing some of their best scorers. Look for the Canadiens to try and get their power play going against the Red Wings bad penalty kill, and Price will continue to trend in the right direction. Canadiens win 3-1.
