New York Rangers vs. Boston Bruins

New York Rangers (29-33-13) at Boston Bruins (46-21-9)

NHL Hockey: Wednesday, March 27, 2019

(TD Garden)

Line and Odds: Boston Bruins -350

Over/Under: 6

The Rangers and the Bruins, nothing better than Original Six Hockey. It’s always a special match-up when the American side of the original six matches up, especially if it’s between New York and Boston. Boston has been on a championship tear lately and their Hockey team is giving yet one more reason to get excited. They’d be wise to sharpen their playoff swords against the lowly Rangers in preparation for a real challenge.

In speaking of challenges, plenty of them have faced the Rangers this season. There was a time not so long ago when this team was pounding on the door for a Stanley Cup but now, they can’t even pound on the door to get a top ten pick. Everything about this season has been steeped in mediocrity for the Rangers.

How mediocre one asks? Their goal scoring and goals against both rank among the bottom ten in the league. Their power play looks a little better teetering toward the middle of the league but then we look at their penalty kill and it’s right back to that “mediocre boy” story for the Rangers.

There is one category that New York finds themselves at the top in…. and that’s penalty minutes. Even topping a list isn’t helping New York at all. They’re four games under .500 and it’s looking like the Stanley Cup Finals won’t be coming back to MSG for a long long time.

They’re 2-6-2 in their last ten and have an abysmal 12-20-5 record on the road. Their last game was a 5-2 beat down at the hands of the Penguins. That was at home. The Rangers now have the blessing of walking into bean-town and facing an even stronger team on their ice. Get those Manhattan’s ready New York. You’re going to need plenty of them to numb out the eyesore that is your Hockey team.

Allow us to go 90 or so miles north…

Oh Boston, of all the teams in your city I dislike, your hockey team might just top that list. Your franchise still possesses the always-admirable Zdeno Chara but even he isn’t enough to mask the little ball of ugly that is Brad Marchard. I have to hand it to the little guy. He knows how to find the back of the net almost as well as he finds the nearest exit after another playoff loss.

That’s in the future though. We’re here to talk about this game. Where as New York is steeped in mediocrity, Boston finds themselves amongst the cream of the crop in the NHL once more. One of the best-balanced teams in the league, Boston enters this game 11th in offense and third in defense. Third is also the position of their power play while their PK holds the 10 position.

Boston has been very strong at home this season with a 28-7-3 record. They’re 6-4 in the last ten games but almost beat Tampa in their own building. I would expect Boston to have an easy time against the Rangers. The Rangers will have to keep players out of the box to keep the Bruin power play off the ice. So far this season, it hasn’t worked at all for them.

There’s no way I can conceive the Rangers walking away with a W in this one. I look at the paper, feel the energy around the NHL and channel my intuition, all of which tell me Boston will make short work of the Broadway Blues. I expect the Bruins to put up a goal or two on the power play all while keeping the Rangers down to a goal, if they’re lucky.

Prediction: Boston 4-New York 1
