Why mess with the NFL when you have Sunday afternoon hockey! Let’s dive into this matchup in CovertheSpread365’s NHL Sunday afternoon preview.

New York Rangers Preview

The Rangers enter L.A. in last place in the Metropolitan division at a pedestrian 3-6-1. After getting beaten down Thursday in Chicago, the Rangers come into L.A. trying to get some kind of rhythm as they embark on a three game road trip in California. The biggest concern for the Rangers at this point in the year is their uneven scoring. New York’s offense has looked a lot like Los Angeles traffic lately with nothing but gridlock out on the ice. Except for their explosion for five goals against Florida, the Rangers have been unable to muster more than three goals in a game in the last couple of weeks. Mika Zibanejad leads New York with nine points coming into tonight’s contest. The rest of the team, however, has been far from productive. NY has a -9 goal differential coming into this afternoon’s game. The ageless Henrik Lundqvist will be minding the net for New York in this one.

Los Angeles Kings Preview

The Kings are limping into today’s game on a six game losing streak. The Kings sit at the bottom of the Pacific Division at 2-7-1. Nothing has gone right for the Kings lately. They ceded seven goals to the Islanders and five to the Sabers on their current losing skid, leaving the Kings’ goal differential at -18. The offensively-challenged Kings have been unable to score more than two goals in a game in the last three weeks. Center Alex Iafallo leads the way for L.A. with just seven points – good enough for the team lead on this squad. Let’s not forget that this was a playoff team last year, so this poor start has been particularly frustrating for the Staples Center faithful. Perhaps it’s an early Thanksgiving for the Kings, as they get to face an equally unimpressive Rangers team at home on a Sunday afternoon.

While both teams have had their struggles this year, I view this contest as an opportunity for the Kings to finally show up in a game against an inferior opponent. New York is in the midst of a very challenging road schedule, while the Kings are in desperate need of some home cooking to get off their six game skid. The Kings are a proud team, looking to find the magic that brought them to the postseason last year. While I fear both teams’ ability to put the puck into the net, I’ll take the home team to take care of business against this Rangers squad.
