It is just about closing time for the NHL season and with fickle games left, the only reason one would watch this match-up would be due to die hard fandom for either team or purely for monetary purposes. Following last nights results, the Senators clinched last place in the league for the year, an accomplishment that would usually be celebrated by fans of a team that is in full rebuild mode, but since Colorado owns the rights to their pick, it is just another piece of misery on an already dreadful season. Ottawa last hosted Tampa Bay in a “best vs worst” match-up and while they held their own in the first period, the Lightning would over power them the rest of the way en route to a 5-2 victory. The Rangers most recently were in New Jersey and lost a close one 4-2 after the Devils scored with under 5 minutes left to take the lead and added an empty netter to boot.
The Rangers have nothing more to play for than pride and development of the younger players on their roster. 3-7 in the last 10 games, New York can ensure they do not move up further than 24th in the overall standings with a loss tonight. While the coaches and players won’t be satisfied with losses, it is preferable for fans who want better odds at a top 3 lottery pick or at the very least a better pick within the top 10.
New York’s defense has been the major concern as of late as they have allowed at least four goals in 6 of their last 7 losses. Their offense has not been much better, being held to three goals or less (sans empty netters) since their February 24th game against the Capitals.
While the Sens season has been marred by on and off ice turmoil, their recent play has not been as disastrous as one would think after the worst team in the league traded away their best forwards. They have split the last 10 contests going 5-5-0 with some impressive wins over Toronto (twice) St Louis and a 4-0 shutout win against the Sabres. While they sit at the bottom, Ottawa’s dreadful record stems solely from their defense as they sit in the top half of the league in goals scored and even tie or outrank four playoff teams. On the other end they have given up a league high 290 goals on the year, with Chicago being the only other team to allow over 280.
Although they will not get a chance to add a young star forward in the draft, the Senators still have the opportunity to let the ones on their roster develop. Rookie Brady Tkachuk has 4 points in his last three games and has put in 5 goals over the last 7 games.

Again, the only people invested in this game are masochistic fans or people with money on the line. Both teams allow a lot of goals and a lot of shots on goal so there should be plenty of opportunities for goals if the numbers hold true. Ottawa has an abysmal road record but their recent play leads me to look away from that resume a little bit and the Rangers are not exactly a home juggernaut. The Senators will have to take advantage of the Rangers bottom five penalty kill and they should get plenty of chances to do so as New York takes the most penalty minutes per game of any team in the league and are second to last in faceoff percentage meaning they do not get the puck out of the zone often enough. I expect the score to go over and while picking a winner feels like a literal crap-shoot I think Ottawa will find a rare road victory tonight.\
