The New York Rangers look to do the impossible as they try to end their three game losing streak to the Vegas Golden Knights, the hottest team in the NHL, on the road.

The Vegas Golden Knights have been the hottest team in the NHL since the start of December. After going 8-11-1, the Golden Knights have gone 18-4-3 and are back to being considered one of the best teams in the NHL. Plus, they are currently on a six game winning streak. The biggest reason for this turnaround is because of the Golden Knights consistency on defense as they allow just 2.62 goals per game (T3rd in NHL) and 28.6 shots on goal (4th in NHL). They are also extremely disciplined when it comes to committing penalties as they average just 7.3 penalty minutes per game (4th in NHL) and they kill 83.3% of opponent penalties (7th in NHL). All these number help mask the fact that their offense isn’t elite as they average 3.0 goals per game, which is just middle of the pack in the NHL. Also, since they struggle with 9.1% shooting, (21st in NHL) they make up for it with 33.1 shots on goal per game (7th in NHL). Alex Tuch leads the team in points with 33 (14 goals, 19 assists) and plus/minus with +14. William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault have also been key pieces this season as they each have 30 points so far this season. Between the sticks the Golden Knights have Marc-Andre Fleury at the helm, and he is having an excellent year going 24-10-4 with a 2.47 GAA and .912 Sv%. His presence had made things much easier for the Golden Knights defense.

The New York Rangers have been going in the opposite direction as they’ve now lost three games in a row and six of their last eight. They’ve had difficulty scoring on occasions and when they do score their defense tends to let up a bit too much. The balance just isn’t there with this group as they come up short on both sides of the ice. It also isn’t a good sign when their points leader, Mika Zibanejad, is also boasting a plus/minus of -14, which is second worst on the team. The score just 2.66 goals per game (27th in NHL) with 28.1 shots on goal (30th in NHL) on 9.5% shooting (15th in NHL). They also struggle in faceoff situations as they win just 48.5% of them, which is near the bottom of the league. On defense it doesn’t get much better as they allow 3.39 goals per game (27th in NHL) on 34.0 shots on goal (27th in NHL). Also, unlike the Golden Knights, the Rangers are not disciplined when it comes to penalties averaging 9.8 minutes per game (28th in NHL) and killing just 75.9% of opponent penalties (27th in NHL). Not even future Hall of Famer Henrik Lundqvist can help this defense as he is having a career worst season with a 12-11-7 record to go with a 3.04 GAA and .909 Sv%.

ESPN NHL Scores New York Rangers vs Vegas Golden Knights

The New York Rangers have an uphill battle to climb in this game as Lundqvist is sitting this one out. The Golden Knights are missing their fair share of players as well, but they are playing way too good to lose this game and at home it should be even easier.

Pick: Golden Knights -1.5
