The Stanley Cup is the hardest sports trophy to win. It doesn't matter if you are the heavy favorite to win it all or not, as long as you have clinched a playoff spot, you really have the same chances as every one else. Every year, the Stanley Cup playoffs brings everyone a big upset or two. Sometimes, one of the teams that makes the Finals is from a team you didn't expect to make it to the end. Last season, both of these scenarios happened. The Tampa Bay Lightning were the best team all season and easily won the presidents trophy. Everyone thought the Lightning would steamroll their way to a Stanley Cup win. Instead, the difficultly of winning the cup hit them like a ton of bricks. Tampa Bay was swept in the First Round by the Columbus Blue Jackets, who were the second wild card team.
No Presidents Trophy winner has ever been swept in the First Round. It happened so fast and was so unexpected, that the Lighting Instagram page had nothing much to say expect thanks for the support this season. What was even crazier then this was the team that ended up winning the cup. The St. Louis Blues were the last place team in the NHL in January. They had an amazing second half, made the playoffs, and hoisted Lord Stanley. They beat the Boston Bruins in seven games and the Bruins also entered the playoffs playing their best hockey. So, if there's anything to take out of these odds below, it's that you should pay attention to those teams that play well heading into the postseason because those teams battled for that seeding or wild card spot, harder then any team that coasted all year.
