Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins have been playing very good hockey the last 5 games. They are 4 in their last 5 games with their only loss being against the Nashville Predators. The Penguins have to keep winning in order to clinch a playoff spot. Despite being the 3rd team in the Metropolitan Division the Penguins still have not officially clinched a playoff spot yet. The Columbus Blue Jackets and the Carolina Hurricanes are right behind the Pittsburgh Penguins with 94 and 93 points respectively. With these teams threatening the Penguins division ranking, the Penguins have to keep winning in order to maintain their 3rd spot in the division. The last thing the Penguins want is to slip into a Wild Card spot where they would have to face a stronger opponent in the 1st round of the playoffs.

One of the strengths of the Penguins this season has been their offensive scoring. Being 6th ranked in goals/game and 5th in power play percentage the Penguins have been masterful this season at creating their own scoring opportunities and capitalizing on said opportunities. In their way of a playoff spot tonight are the Detroit Red Wings. Even though the Red Wings are nowhere close to clinching a playoff spot, the Penguins cannot take them lightly because the Red Wings are on a five-game winning streak. Nothing would please the Red Wings more than delaying the Penguins chance to obtain a playoff spot. To get the win in this game, the Penguins are going to have to pressure the Red Wings offensively and play good defense like they’ve done recently.

Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings are in no position to threaten the Penguins or any other team for a playoff spot this season. The Red Wings are playing the remainder of this season for their pride. Their record is 31-38-10 are 13th in the Eastern Conference. However, against all odds the Red Wings have won their last five games including impressive wins against the Vegas Golden Knights and the Boston Bruins. The Red Wings have come to life at the end of the season and if not careful, other teams may take the Red Wings too lightly which could result in a late-season loss which many teams cannot afford at such a critical juncture in the season.

A big piece of the Red Wings recent success has been the stellar play of Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Dylan Larkin. These three together have fueled the offense of the Red Wings over their winning streak. Coming into tonight’s game against the Penguins, the Red Wings are the clear underdogs, but if the Red Wings offense continues to be as productive as they have been, they will be a very hard team for the Penguins to beat. In spite of the disparity in their record, this game tonight should be very interesting and perhaps the Red Wings will provide a much greater challenge than what everyone predicts.
