The Edmonton Oilers look to get back to winning ways as they host the Pittsburgh Penguins at Rogers Place for the start of a quick two game home stand.

It has been a tough month of December for the Edmonton Oilers, as they’ve gone 3-5-1 so far. This is a far cry from how this team looked to start the season as they were one of the hottest teams out of the gate with a record of 7-1-0. They’ve won just one of their past six games as their offense and defense continues to be on the wrong page. The Oilers score just 2.89 goals (20th in NHL) on 29.2 shots on goal (27th in NHL) and 9.9% shooting (12th in NHL) while allowing 3.0 goals (T15th in NHL) on 31.6 shots on goal (18th in NHL). These numbers are not what you would expect from a team that is third in their division and with 42 points in 37 games. So how are they doing it? Well, they have two of the most dynamic scorers and play makers in the game in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who are currently first and second in points and assists in the NHL. Plus, they are the most efficient team when it comes to power plays on either end of the ice. They convert on 30.4% of their power plays (1st in NHL) and they kill 85.1% of opponent penalties (5th in NHL). This team has the most potential to be some special.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are the hottest team in the month of December at the moment as they have gone 6-1-0 thus far. They have been solid on both the offense and defense all season and are one of the most balanced teams in the league. What is really impressive is that they’ve been able to enjoy this success with injuries to many key players, one of them being superstar Sidney Crosby, who hasn’t played since November 9th. As a team they average 3.29 goals (7th in NHL) on 33.7 shots on goal (5th in NHL) and 9.8% shooting (14th in NHL) while allowing just 2.65 goals (7th in NHL), 29.4 shots on goal (6th in NHL) and 6.7 penalty minutes (3rd in NHL). All in all they are tied for fourth in goal differential in the league, with only the elite teams ahead of them. They have been leaning on the excellent play of center Evgeni Malkin, winger Jake Guentzel and backup goalie Tristan Jarry. Guentzel leads the team in points with 36, while Malkin has 29 points in just 21 games played. However, Jarry is currently the NHL leader in save percentage (.940), goals against average (1.85) and shutouts (3).

Injuries are no longer considered a factor for the Penguins as they have been able to deal with them incredibly well. However, what might be concerning is the fact that they aren’t very good on the power play or against it, while the Oilers are. It might be a stretch, but this is a scenario where McDavid and Draisaitl will be able to eat plenty.
