Central division playoff contenders clash as the Blues host the Avalanche with both teams fighting for seeding. St. Louis is coming off a small east coast trip in which they lost to the Rangers 4-2 after going up 2-0 and beat the Devils 3-2 in Overtime. Colorado is playing their first game since their vital win against the Coyotes that saw them blow a 2-0 lead in the final 8 minutes of the third period but eventually take it in a shoot out. With the win Colorado went three points up on Arizona (who has since closed the gap to 1 again) and made their road to playoffs much easier, putting it in their own hands. This  is the last match-up between these two division rivals this season, with the Blues taking the last three games.

St. Louis Blues

St. Louis was amazingly at one point the worst team in the entire league and now, with a win and some help from the hated Blackhawks tonight, the Blues can take over as first place in the Central Division. Through a mixture of red hot rookie goaltending, new and improved coaching and some failure from teams around them, the Blues have gone from a joke to a serious contender in the West. They slumped a bit in the beginning of March but have won 6 of their last 7 games and have gained at least a point in 8 of their last nine overall.

Friday’s loss to the Rangers was goalie Jordan Binnington’s first loss in six starts and just his fifth in regulation all season. He currently leads the NHL in Goals against average and is second in save percentage.

Colorado Avalanche

Colorado’s season has been close to a polar opposite from St. Louis’ as the Avalanche were one of the league’s top teams early on in the year but started reeling around December and fell out of a playoff spot altogether. Then they started to rack up the wins again and with a 6-0-1 record in their last seven they have put themselves in control of their own destiny to reach the playoffs for the second year in a row.

While Miko Rantanen remains sidelined with an upper body injury, Captain Gabriel Landeskog made his long awaited return on Friday against the Yotes, grabbing an assist and he looks to be a strong presence in this final stretch of games.

FREE NHL Prediction Colorado Avalanche vs St. Louis Blues

This game holds so much weight for both teams and they are no strangers of playing big games against each other, as last years season ended on this match up to decide the final wild card spot. Colorado has found ways to win but their last two showings do not spark full confidence from me as they got massively out-shot by both Chicago and Arizona and needed to rely on Grubauer just to survive.St. Louis has been extremely strong at home as of late and I think the opportunity to be division leader after the start they had this season will be enough to put them over the edge. I would expect a low scoring St. Louis win that goes under due to stellar goalie play on both ends.
