Game 1 is in the books and the Bruins beat the Blues 4-2. Boston was all over the St. Louis Blues from start to finish, but the Bruins were actually down in this game. Despite all the zone time and great chances, the Blues had a 2-0 lead. Boston didn’t panic and stormed back to tie the game in the second period, and go ahead in the third. The Bruins have now won eight games in a row and just look unstoppable. Meanwhile, the Blues had another bad Game 1 to start a series and look for them to make adjustments in Game 2. The starters for Game 2 are Jordan Binnington vs Tuukka Rask.
The Blues are feeling a bit blue after their Game 1 loss. St. Louis has a great start and survived the Bruins onslaught for awhile. Then once Boston scored, the game became a little more tilted. Also, the Blues had a little bit of karma come to them in this game. They were complaining about some of the head shots that the Bruins were doing to the Blues, but didn’t they get away with these type of hits in the Sharks series? That’s right they did and they can see now that it’s not a good way to try and beat a team. The Blues lost the physical game and the puck flow. It was nice to see Brayden Schenn get a goal and put up 6 shots. Vladimir Tarasenko continued his scoring ways and he now has a seven game point streak, but the Blues need all their top guys to pull through if they want to steal a game in Boston. Binnington stopped a lot of good Bruins looks and got some help from the posts. He showed fight and the Blues need to make the adjustments, and play a clean game.
The Bruins are on quite the run right now. Ever since they went down 2-1 in the Columbus Blue Jackets series, they haven’t lost. Five of their eight wins were by 3 goals or more and of course they have done well in the low scoring games with the way Rask has been playing. In Game 1, is was all about the whole team putting shots up and delivering some big hits. The biggest hit came from Torey Krug who, without his helmet, absolutely leveled Robert Thomas. The Blues didn’t like that hit and they probably didn’t like the fact that the Bruins fourth line did damage in Game 1. Boston is thriving in all scenarios right now and they can rely on all their lines to come through. The Bruins will need to repeat their Game 1 efforts and their winning streak playing style. Boston did well at blocking shots, staying disciplined, and firing shots at will.
NHL Playoffs St. Louis Blues vs Boston Bruins
So, who will win Game 2? The Blues are 2-1 in Game 2s this postseason and have been one of the best teams to comeback after ugly games or being down in a series. St. Louis was down 3-2 in the Dallas series and 2-1 in the San Jose series. They closed out both of those series by outscoring the opponent 6-2, and 12-2. Bottom line, Binnington and the Blues making big adjustments can happen. Meanwhile, the Bruins have an eight game winning streak and they haven’t lost at home since a double overtime loss to the Blue Jackets in Round 2 Game 2. Boston has lost only three times at home and have only been outplayed big time in a 4-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first game of this postseason run. With Raask giving up 2 goals or less in six straight games and the Bruins having a four game home winning streak, they should win 4-3.
