The Boston Bruins are on the ropes and they are very angry.

The Bruins enter game 6 after a crushing home loss in which the officials overlooked an egregious penalty that lead to the game winning goal for St. Louis. Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy called the situation “a black eye” for the NHL and he’s not wrong. As Cassidy pointed out, even Tyler Bozak, the Blues forward who committed the foul, appeared to expect he’d be penalized. The referee kept the whistle in his pocket and the city of Boston erupted in rage. Now the Bruins need to find a way to bounce back and win an elimination playoff game on the road or their season is over. Bruins fans should hope the missed call will inject some additional energy into the top line of Marchand, Bergeron and Pastrnak, which has produced only one goal in this series.

The Blues on the other hand couldn’t care less about how it happened, because they’re here. A local St. Louis newspaper shamelessly had some fun at the expense of Bruins fans with the front page headline “WHAT A TRIP”. The St. Louis Blues are one win away from ending a 52 year cup drought, and they have one chance to finish the job in front of their home fans. For a team that has come up short so many times in the playoffs in that past few years, a win would be absolutely huge for this fan base. If it does happen for the Blues it will be a true team effort. This is a Blues team that was at one point last in the standings, and clawed all the way back without the help of a point per game scorer. They’ve relied on contributions from up and down the roster and they’ll need it more than ever in game 6 with Ivan Barbashev suspended and rookie forward Robert Thomas’ status still unclear.

I, like all good Americans without a Good Will Hunting accent, hate Brad Marchand. I hate his ugly mug, I hate his playing style and worst of all I hate how good he is. It’s been a delight to see his lack of success thus far in the finals and I hope more than anything that this continues in game 6. However, like all good Americans without a Good Will Hunting accent, I know that sports will almost always disappoint me. Counting out a Boston sports team foolish game and I’m not making that mistake. Lord knows I don’t want it to happen but it feels to me like Brad Marchand is going to lead the Bruins to an upset in game 6.
