NHL Picks and Parlays Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning

After Games 1 and 2 of this series, everyone in the NHL world has one question: what in the world has happened to the Tampa Bay Lightning? During the regular season, the Lightning were the unquestioned best team in the NHL Not only did they have an amazing record, but it was a historic one as well. Going into the playoffs, the Lightning were the team to be feared; easily expected to win the Stanley Cup. However, now deep into the 1st round of the playoffs, the Lightning find themselves down two games against the Columbus Blue Jackets. At this point, the Lightning are in panic mode and are in danger of producing one of the most disappointing playoff performances in recent memory.

To make this season competitive, the Lightning are going to have to regroup and return to who they have been as a team. In Game 1 of the series, the Lightning lost 3-4 after having a three-goal lead over the Blue Jackets. In Game 2, the Lightning lost 1-5 to the Blue Jackets, being utterly dominated in every facet of the game. The last two performances we have seen from the Lightning are not at all what we have gotten used to seeing this season. This playoff series is the first major obstacle the Lightning have faced all season so the remainder of this season will be a test of the fortitude and character of this team. Let’s see how they will respond, it’s now or never for the Lightning.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Can the Blue Jackets finish the job? So far, the Blue Jackets are en route to pulling off a stunning upset against the Tampa Bay Lightning. During the regular season, no one expected this result thus far in this series. During the regular season, the Blue Jackets finished with a record of 47-31-4 which put them at 5th place in the Eastern Conference, a record that is paltry compared to the record of the Lightning. In spite of their regular season discrepancy, the Blue Jackets are finding ways to win, and not just win but win in dominant fashion. All they need now is two more wins to seal the deal and be victorious over a strong Lightning team.

Despite their great position in the series thus far, the Blue Jackets know better than to assume that they have this series wrapped up. Last season, the Blue Jackets were in an identical situation with the Washington Capitals. They were up 2-0 in the series and ending up dropping 4 straight games and losing the series 2-4. With last season ingrained in their memory, the Blue Jackets should be able to sustain their high level of intensity as the end of the series comes onto the horizon. With games 3 and 4 at their home, the Blue Jackets will be energized by their home crowd which should give them an added push to continue winning and remain focused on the task at hand.

I think that the Lightning will come back in the series and win tonight’s game. Even though they will not be eliminated if they lose this game, the chances of the Lightning advancing in the playoffs will be significantly lower if they lose tonight’s game. Also, I believe that the Lightning feel extra pressure to win tonight because if they go down 0-3, they are greatly in danger of losing the series and becoming one of the most under-performing teams in a long time.

PICK: Tampa Bay Lightning -1.5
