Its a battle of western conference division leaders as the Sharks make a trip up north to Winnipeg to take on the Jets. San Jose was in Minnesota last night and blanking the Wild 3-0 and holding them to just 24 shots on goal as Martin Jones picked up his second shut out against Minnesota this season. The Jets followed up their 8 goal outburst in Carolina very poorly, striking just once in a 3-1 loss in the nation’s capital that saw them get blanked on the power play (0 for 5). This is the third and final meeting between these sides and the series is tied 1-1 going into tonight with Winnipeg taking the first game in December 5-3 and the Sharks winning in Overtime off the stick of Joe Pavelski on February 5th.
The result on Sunday was very disappointing after such a dominating performance in Raleigh but it seemed the Jets had used all their luck up in one go. Winnipeg out-shot the Capitals 34-18 but struggled to crack Phoenix Copley’s code and going 0 for on the power play proved it just wasn’t their day. Games like that will happen but it was humbling coming immediately after a game where it felt like everything would go in. Sunday’s game ended an eight game point streak for Captain Blake Wheeler who totaled 15 points during the stretch (7G 8A). He had also scored in four straight games prior to the game in Washington, including a four goal showing in Columbus.
The Jets are playing the fourth game in a stretch of six in a row against top ten teams in the standings. It is a good barometer for the club to see where they stack up against the NHL’s elite and a strong precursor to the type of intensity and precision they will need come April. Winnipeg is 1-2 so far but all three games have come on the road in the eastern time zone and they will get the next three in their backyard.
The Sharks come into the second game of a back-to-back road trip winners of five in a row and defensively, San Jose Sharks have only allowed their opponents to go over 2 goals only once. Tonight is the Sharks first game as an underdog since their trip to western Canada in early February against the Jets and Flames in which they won both contests. When facing western teams, they hold a 4-1 record as a dog and 14-6 record on the road, meaning San Jose is fully up to the task when the odds are against them and it stands incredibly relevant tonight as they are 8-1 against the spread on the road versus Central teams.

Don’t let the high 6.5 total scare you. It’s been set this high for a reason. The Jets and Sharks are two of the top offensive teams in the NHL and can light up scoreboards on any given night. Winnipeg went OVER the 6.5 total itself in an 8-1 demolition of the Hurricanes last Friday. Winnipeg Jets remain one of the most trustworthy home teams in the league and don’t lose often in the favorite role.
