Palace and Newcastle clash in race for top-half finish
Newcastle United travel to Crystal Palace on Matchday 27 of the Premier League. The teams are separated by just one spot and one point heading into the final third of the season. Newcastle lie in 13th position with 31 points while Palace are breathing down their neck on 30 points in 14th.
There have been times this season where Roy Hodgson has let his experience do the talking at the helm of the Eagles. Crystal Palace have repeatedly had to deal with injuries to key players this season, but on paper, they find themselves well-placed in a tight race to a top-half finish with twelve games left this season. However, Palace come into this match on a barren run of form. Hodgson’s side has not managed a victory since beating West Ham in late December. In their last five matches, they have drawn two and lost three. A 1-1 draw against Arsenal, who played the last third of the game with 10 men was followed by a more enterprising performance at Manchester City in a 2-2 draw. But since then, Palace have lost three in a row. They suffered back-to-back home defeats at the hands of Southampton (0-2) and Sheffield United (0-1) before Everton handed them another loss, 3-1 at Goodison Park. The Eagles will know they have an outside chance of finishing among the top-10, but to accomplish that, they will have to string together a positive run of results. A home win in this fixture is an absolute necessity.
Steve Bruce finds himself in a territory similar to Hodgson, but at least Newcastle United have to go only about two and a half weeks back in time to relive their latest victory. The Magpies have, however, struggled in recent times and have recorded three draws and a loss in their last five matches apart from the solitary win. An encouraging 2-2 draw at Everton was followed by dour goalless stalemates at home to Oxford United in the FA Cup and Norwich in the league. Newcastle followed this up with a brilliant attacking display to win 3-2 in the Replay fixture against Oxford and secure their passage into the next round, but were left facing similar problems when Arsenal thrashed them 4-0 last weekend. A largely lacklustre attack along with a leaky defence have left the Magpies often dependent on individual brilliance, which in itself has also been inconsistent. An away victory will be a massive boost for Bruce and his men heading into the final stretch of the season.

Newcastle edged the reverse fixture in December, winning 1-0 at St. James’s Park. Miguel Almiron scored the only goal of the game with around seven minutes of regulation time to play, finishing past Vicente Guaita in the Palace goal. In the process, he also broke a personal duck of 26 matches without a goal. Crystal Palace had more possession (58%), managed twice the number of shots (16 to 8) and even had more shots on target (4 to 3) than the hosts, but couldn’t hit the back of the net. Newcastle punished the Eagles’ profligacy in front of goal and Almiron made sure the Magpies collected all three points.
James McArthur will be crucial in midfield for the Eagles. Newcastle often set up to put as many bodies as possible in the centre of the pitch and the onus will fall on the Scot to move the ball and create chances for Palace’s misfiring forwards.
Newcastle will hope Allan Saint-Maximin can provide them with some intensity going forward. The French winger has time and again come up with a spark of brilliance and pace to create goalscoring chances for the Magpies and has established himself as a fan-favorite. Saint-Maximin will hope he can put in a few more good performances before the end of the season which might lead to the 22-year-old attracting interest from clubs across Europe.
Cenk Tosun, James Tomkins, Martin Kelly, Mamadou Sakho and Jeffrey Schlupp are all unavailable for selection through injury for Hodgson’s side.
Predicted Line-up: Guaita; van Aanholt, Cahill, Tomkins, Ward; Milivojevic; Zaha, McArthur, McCarthy, Ayew; Benteke.
Jetro Willems, Ciaran Clark, Andy Carroll and DeAndre Yedlin are all ruled out due to injury. However, Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto have a chance of returning to the squad.
Predicted Line-up: Dubravka; Rose, Schar, Lascelles, Fernandez, Lazaro; Saint-Maximin, Bentaleb, Longstaff, Almiron; Joelinton.
