City look to add to Moyes's misery

Manchester City host West Ham United on Matchday 26 of the Premier League. The match, which was initially to be played on 9th February was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. But this delay will rarely be the dominant backdrop for either club while entering this fixture.

Pep Guardiola's side has seen plenty of domestic glory over the last two seasons, including a domestic treble last season. However, their performances in Europe have repeatedly flattered to deceive. Manchester City have, for long, pondered how to break their duck in Europe. But now with an immensely talented squad at their disposal and a fantastic manager, the side find themselves banned from all UEFA competitions for the next two seasons due to breaches of Financial Fair Play regulations.

City do not seem particularly distraught; in fact, they even revealed in a statement that they were "disappointed, but not surprised", and their fans have never really filled in the seats at the Etihad on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Yet, it is a shame for football that one of Europe's heavyweights find themselves in a situation that City is presently in.
On the pitch, recent form has not favoured City either, with just two wins from their last five matches (1-0 against Sheffield United in the league and 4-0 against Fulham in the FA Cup). They have drawn one match, 2-2 at home to Crystal Palace, and come into this fixture on the back of two losses - first a 1-0 reverse to Manchester United in the League Cup and then a 2-0 reverse at Tottenham in the league that has seen them fall a whopping 25 points behind leaders Liverpool. City still second in the league, find themselves in strong positions to lift the FA Cup and League Cup and have a Champions League Round of 16 match against Real Madrid. But recent developments have been hard-hitting. And the Citizens' response to it all begins on Wednesday.

David Moyes has his own set of problems. West Ham find themselves in the relegation zone with 13 matches to go and are struggling to work together as a unit. 10 out of their remaining fixtures are also against sides in the top-half of the table. The Hammers come into this match with two draws and three losses from their last five matches. An enterprising performance saw them eke out a 1-1 draw against Carlo Ancelotti's Everton, but they were then taken to the cleaners at Leicester, with the hosts running away 4-1 winners. West Ham hit another low as lower-tier West Brom dumped them out of the FA Cup through a 1-0 defeat of the Hammers. Liverpool came visiting next and ran out 2-0 winners in routine victory before Moyes's side let a two-goal advantage slip twice to draw 3-3 with Brighton. It just isn't clicking for the visitors at the moment and it would take some extraordinary performances if they are to save themselves from the drop. That could start with a confident showing against a City side that finds itself in problems that stretch to the other end of the spectrum.

City were emphatic winners in the reverse fixture at the London Stadium when the sides met in August. Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring halfway into the first half, but the hosts were in the game till six minutes into the second half when Raheem Sterling scored with a clinical finish. He then added another to kill the game with fifteen minutes to go and completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, with Sergio Aguero netting a penalty in between as well. A five-star performance from City on the first day of the season saw them grab three points in a result that never really looked in doubt. The Hammers managed just three shots on target in reply to the visitors' nine and never got going against a well-drilled City side.
