Tuesday, 1st January 2019, 8.30 pm IST, Emirates Stadium

ODDS: Arsenal: 3/10 (1.30), Fulham: 8/1 (9.00), Draw: 9/2(5.5)

The first day of the new year will see the fifth positioned Arsenal and this season’s newly promoted Fulham team battling at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal who will be aiming a top-four finish this season will hope for a routine win against the table minnows. Manchester United is catching up with the Gunners at a rapid pace under their new manager. Therefore, it’s critical for Emery’s men to demonstrate some consistency in their upcoming matches. Fulham on the other side is fighting against its battle of relegation. Ranieri’s men are sitting 19th in the table currently.

The club from the Emirates stadium is struggling in their defense department this season. Emery’s men faced an embarrassing defeat at Anfield with a scoreline of five goals to one. It did remind us of the issues still existent in the club from their previous season. The club has lost three and drawn one in their last five matches. It was one of the worst runs of the Gunners since their start of this season. Whereas Fulham will be coming to Emirates after a narrow 1-0 margin against the Huddersfield. The newly promoted club has improved substantially under their new manager Claudio Ranieri. Fulham won one match and drew two in their last five matches. The club from London managed two clean sheets in their last three fixtures. It was quite an improvement in the team after they had conceded goals in each of their first seventeen EPL appearances.

The two clubs have met nine times in their previous fixtures, and the historical data is completely against Fulham. The Gunners have won five matches and drawn three against the club from Craven Cottage. It includes their 5-1 win this season. The sole concern the former PSG manager will be having is of the long injury list of Arsenal. Danny Welbeck, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Konstantinos Mavropanos are already out of action while Hector Bellerin, Nacho Monreal and Mesut Ozil are doubtful to play on the first day of the new year. Fulham does have some good news from the bench though. Alfie Mawson and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa both are fit for the upcoming match despite knocks.

The battle between these two teams is expected to remain a one-sided affair. Although, any upset from the Italian manager should never be ridden off after his Leicester’s experience. Both the clubs are struggling at the back this season. Therefore, it will be the forwards who will decide the winner at the Emirates. Arsenal will look to attack through their long balls and by pressing down the wings. The Gunners need to avoid offsides and any individual errors to secure all the expected three points. The club from London will be hoping to score from their set pieces and prevent any dangerous fouls in the penalty box. Fulham will be happy with a draw in the away game and if they could gain anything more than that against Emery’s men, it will serve as a massive boost for them in their campaign to survive the relegation zone.
