Belgium lost a 1-0 game in the semifinals to France in which they were able to have more possession but had only 3 shots on goal. Belgium completed just 8 of 35 passes in France’s penalty area during their 1-0 defeat. Also, Belgium only managed to create 7 chances while allowing 18 for France and 6 of those from Mbappe as they struggled to contain him with his pace. Belgium will need Eden Hazard to pick his team back up and not let the disappointment of failing to reach the final force them to leave Russia empty handed. Romelu Lukaku will undoubtedly be trying to close the gap to Harry Kane for most goals in the tournament as he sits at 4 and has the best chance to catch him plus after seeing England struggle with Mandzukic for Croatia he should feel good about his chances of adding to his total and scoring a couple of goals in this one.
England was defeated in extra time by Croatia after leading for most of the game after a Kieran Trippier free kick in the fifth minute but allowed two unanswered goals to suffer the defeat. Trippier was England’s best player before being forced off by an injury in extra time as he served balls in from the corner and free kicks allowing England to show their danger from set pieces and England got a bit of a boost as he practiced on Friday and appears to be available for this matchup. England struggled to play the ball short and keep possession and instead chose to play the long ball out of the back with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Harry Kane is entering this match with the lead in the golden boot standings with 6 goals including going 3 for 3 on penalties. The midfield of England will be in for a big challenge as they struggled to contain Croatia’s midfield in the second half and extra time. England also has trouble creating chances during open play only managing 6 shots on target.

Both teams have to overcome the failure to get a place in the World Cup final. Both were lost in heartbreaking fashion and both had chances to advance but lacked the ability to finish. England has a day less of rest and played an extra 30 minutes of extra time in their game and could have a little tougher time recovering. This game should be open and fast paced as the stakes are low and lineup changes should be coming in an effort to battle fatigue as well as give some players who may not have had a chance in the tournament to play in a World Cup game. Belgium has been great on the counter attack but had trouble in the final third especially when they had control of the ball. They’re the more talented and rested side with this being their kind of match they should come out on top.
