Belgium and England meet to decide the third-place team in the World Cup.
Yet again, Belgium didn’t live up to expectations. Through the years, this has been their trademark. With a stacked team, they fall short. Against France, Belgium couldn’t put it past Hugo Lloris. The French keeper saved every ball that came at him. Though the Red Devils played a good match, winning 64% possession and corners, they couldn’t get the stat that mattered: a goal. Belgium was the oldest team in the semifinals. Stars like Vincent Kompany (32), Jan Vertonghen (31), and Toby Alderweireld (29), might not be ready for another World Cup. Who knows if they will be able to keep up the level of talent they’ve been accustomed to in the last few national teams. This match against England is a game of pride, and for a team who is always coming up short, there is no doubt that Belgium will show up and prove that they are still worthy of respect around the soccer world.
Well, the team is coming home, but football is not. The loss to Croatia seemed to be the most devastating loss of the cup for a country that was all in on their team. This match came down to one simple principle: Croatia capitalized on their limited chances and England missed their numerous chances. After starting hot and drilling a free kick in the 5th minute, England failed to finish another opportunity. Once extra time started, it was all Croatia. England’s defense looked lackadaisical and ineffective. The First goal came by a Kyle Walker mistake. Walker failed to high point the ball which allowed Ivan Perisic to reach it and score. For the last goal, Mario Mandzukic just ran harder than everyone. Notwithstanding the defense, Keeper Jordan Pickford played excellent, both in starting attacks by supplying players downfield and in net. England lost to Belgium earlier in the tournament, so they have plenty of motivation in this game to even the score.

A third place trophy really isn’t anything to celebrate, so expect this one to play like a regular exhibition match. Key veterans might be hoping to protect their club career and won’t want to risk injury. But there is extra motivation for an England squad who will undoubtedly take their frustrations out on a team that they had lost to previously in the tournament. This game could go either way; Belgium is the better team but England has the motivations. The question is whether England is in the right mindset after their heartbreaking loss just 3 days ago.
