France showed their toughness in being able to break down a tough and disciplined Uruguay team in a 2-0 victory and was able to get out of Group D atop the standings to advance to the semifinals. France’s midfield and defense will face their strongest test however and Paul Pogba will be under an added microscope as they face a team that has shown incredible metal in the midfield and as his club teammate Romelu Lukaku has been playing his best soccer of his career to help lead Belgium. N’Golo Kante will also need to cover a lot of ground defensively and try to limit De Bruyne who will be having to try to find passes to connect the front line. Oliver Giroud hasn’t had the highest profile tournament but has been able to open up lanes for Mbappe to use his pace to create problems for the opposing defense. Giroud will be the center of attention on set pieces as he uses all 6 feet 4 inches to try to get his head on the ball and force Courtois to make saves or possibly draw a penalty as defenders have been getting more physical with him the added VAR could force the officials to make a tough call at a crucial juncture of the game. Griezmann is 2 for 2 on penalties and has added a goal in run of play but a bet to make could be Griezmann to score if you think France is advancing or France is awarded a penalty in this game.
Belgium has cemented their place as their golden generation finally lived up to their potential and are riding high after defeat favorites Brazil. Thomas Meunier has been suspended for a yellow card accumulation and will force Belgium to change their defense. Belgium experimented successfully against Brazil with Kevin De Bruyne as a false 9 and let Lukaku play wide and even let him play further back at times to hold the ball up which freed De Bruyne up for the game clinching goal. This performance came after a 3-2 win over a Japan team that looked ready to pull the upset before Belgium answered with 3 straight goals in just under 30 minutes. Nacer Chadli has been one of the biggest surprises breaking his way into the starting XI and coming on as a substitute helping to get Belgium going after trailing 2-0 to Japan including the winner in the 94th minute winner and being named a starter against Brazil. Many predicted this would be a typical Belgian team that had the potential to go far but couldn’t deliver when it mattered most but now they sit 90 minutes away from the World Cup final.

Both of these teams have great attacking options up front and have shown the ability to outscore opponents when their defense isn’t operating at top level. The defenses haven’t had the easiest times so far in this World Cup with France already having allowed 3 goals to an Argentina side that didn’t look nearly as clinical as this Belgium team while Belgium was a little fortunate to only have allowed a goal to Brazil who lacked the final touch that Griezmann or Mbappe have shown in this tournament. In addition to this Belgium is missing a key member of their defense which could make them even more vulnerable. This game could get a slow start due to each team not being willing to be aggressive with so much at stake but when the first goal is scored the game should be opened up and as great as these two keepers have been 2.5 seems low for two attack minded teams who both have pace and players who can create something from nothing. The over is a good bet with the line being low and both defenses being unconvincing and some of the best attackers in the world sensing a moment to write a legacy for themselves on soccer’s biggest stage and two teams who are at their best when the play is open and Belgium’s countering and France’s probing should see plenty of opportunities to score.
