Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United

Premier League Football: Saturday 02nd February,2019

Preview Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United

The race for top four in England is heating up. Two spots up for grabs and four teams in the running. One of them being Tottenham Hotspur. Having had a great start to the season, they have weathered down since the Christmas period. On the other side of the table, Newcastle sweat to live another day. With off the field problems a large, all that Rafa Benitez’s side need right now is three points.

The race for the top four

Liverpool and Manchester City look set to be fighting it out for ultimate glory. Behind them, is a square of teams struggling to get into the Champions League places. No one really has yet made a stamping authority. Chelsea, who were having a great season until the turn of the year are faltering. Arsenal have had a stop start season and continue to keep the critics guessing. Manchester United who began miserably seem to have caught up with the pace in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s return to England. Spurs meanwhile have a healthy seven point lead over the others but there are problems a plenty for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Injury Crisis

Tottenham are the only side in Premier Football history, not to have signed a single player in the two transfer windows. They have an upcoming stadium and hence is budget is slim. Harry Kane, their main man is injured for the best part of a busy February. Same is the case for midfielder Dele Alli. The North London side were struggling against a rejuvenated Watford in the midweek game until Heung-Min-Son came off the bench to turn the tables. For most parts of the game, Spurs struggled and that may be an indicator for what lies ahead.

The Newcastle Conundrum

Newcastle United are in a unique position. There is drama everywhere. The supporters are not happy with the owner over how things are operated. And yet, they signed Miguel Almiron for a record breaking fee which got shattered years after Michael Owen was signed. In the midweek round of games, Newcastle surprisingly beat Manchester City at home 2-1. A result that shocked everyone. It was a gift from Rafa Benitez to his former side Liverpool. Amidst all this, you don’t know what is the future for the Magpies. Newcastle find themselves five points from safety, but nothing is given in this game of uncertainties.

The Game

Tottenham take on Newcastle in Saturday’s early kickoff. Both teams are in search of points in this deciding period. Newcastle can steer clear of the drop zone with a win but it is Tottenham who need it more. One slip up and the season could be over for the North Londoners. They went out of the two domestic cups in one week and Champions League Football remains their only silver lining. Meanwhile, Newcastle are on a high after securing that mammoth win over City and signing Miguel Almiron. Expect Rafa to sit back and hit on the counter with Tottenham having all the possession. Spurs will rely on Fernando Llorente for goals in Harry Kane’s absence. Spurs lead Newcastle in the head to head record 69-58. This promises to be a match with everything and tactics in loads. Wembley beckons!
