European and South American nations have dominated world football for a while now, with Europe having the edge in the rivalry of late, winning 4 of the last 6 World Cups. On tabs for Saturday afternoon is Peru of South America vs. Denmark of Europe, 11 and 12 respectively in world FIFA rankings, proving to be a must watch affair.
Led by superstar midfielder Christian Eriksen, Denmark placed 2nd in their qualifier group, a few points behind Poland. They had to win a play-off against the Republic of Ireland to book their ticket to Russia, in which they won 5-1 on aggregate. Eriksen led that charge by scoring a hat-trick in one of the games. Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski matched Eriksen’s goal tally during World Cup qualifying at 11. Denmark is a real force to be reckoned with for the entire field with a star goalkeeper in Kasper Schmeichel, and 2 forwards to look out for in Pione Sisto and Nicolai Jorgensen playing in front of their star man Eriksen.
Striker Paolo Guerro, Jefferson Farfan and attacking midfield player Christian Cueva are the 3 players to watch on 11th ranked in the world Peruvian national team. 34-year-old Guerro has 34 goals in 87 caps for his country, while Cueva tallied 4 goals in qualifiers, including an equalizer against Argentina. Farfan contributed vital goals against Paraguay and in the playoff victory over New Zealand, suggesting he’s in good form for Russia. Ironic enough, their manager Ricardo Gareca was responsible for denying Peru a place at the 1982 World Cup being scoring a decisive goal while playing for Argentina. After 20 years of coaching experience, he’ll look to lead Peru back to the knockout stages.
It’s been a while
This is Peru’s first World Cup appearance since 1982, ending a 36-year-olddrought.
While Peru doesn’t have the star-studded talent of other teams, they have the experience and ability to adapt to different pitch/weather conditions, which may prove valuable in Russia. Even though Denmark is likely more talented, Peru will come out hungrier, wanting to take advantage of their rare chance at making a run at a World Cup, so expect they’ll take the full 3 points in this matchup.
