Juve look to hold on to top spot
Leaders Juventus travel to SPAL on Matchday 25 of the Serie A. Sitting just one point ahead of Lazio and three ahead of Inter, anything short of a win might spell doom for the side from Turin. As for the hosts, who lie right at the base of the top-flight table, a win will go a long way in setting up a late charge towards survival.
To say Luigi di Bagio's team is in a rut would be an understatement. SPAL have enjoyed a torrid campaign so far in the league, collecting just 15 points from 24 matches. Their recent form is a source for worry too - they come into this match after four losses on the trot and just one win in their last five matches. The Ferrara-based outfit sent shockwaves around the top-flight when they beat Atalanta 2-1 at their own stadium and fans hoped it would signal the start of an attempt to stay up in the top-flight. However, since that victory, SPAL have recorded losses at home to Bologna (1-3) and Sassuolo (1-2) as well as away (a 5-1 whooping by Lazio and a 2-1 reverse at Lecce). It just doesn't seem to be clicking for di Bagio's side and an other loss could, which looks imminent, could very well seal their return to Serie B.
Different problems haunt Maurizio Sarri well into his first season in charge of Juventus. Two losses, two draws and a loss in their last five matches have seen their advantage at the summit drop to a solitary point with matches against Inter in the league, AC Milan in the Coppa and a Champions League date with Lyon all to come in the next two weeks. Juventus's run began with a 2-1 reverse at Napoli, but they bounced back quickly with a 3-0 victory over Fiorentina. But the inconsistencies continued in a shock 2-1 defeat to Verona and then a 1-1 draw at home to Milan in the Coppa. Juve saw off Brescia 2-0 in their last game leading up to this fixture, but Sarri has much to think about. The Italian will have to rally his troops and guide them to positive results over the next few weeks if he is to remain at the helm next season.

Juventus completed a routine victory over SPAL in the reverse fixture in late September last year. Goals on either side of half-time from Miralem Pjanic and Cristiano Ronaldo saw the side from Turin continue their unbeaten start to the Serie A season. The Old Lady took 21 shots and had 10 on target, while the visitors managed just one on target from five shots. A clinical performance at the Allianz Stadium saw Juve sit comfortably atop the league table.
