Fanduel Boxing Pick Gennady Golovkin vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko

Gennady Golovkin will make his return to the ring at Madison Square Garden against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in a fight for the vacant IBF and IBO Middleweight Titles. Golovkin looks to continue his success at 160 lbs. as he takes on a top contender in Derevyanchenko. Golovkin is 37, 5’10 and 160 lbs with a 70 inch reach. Derevyanchenko is 33, 5’9 and 160 lbs with a 67 inch reach. Derevyanchenko, a Ukrainian boxer is a compact, strong middleweight that is a pressure fighter that likes to come forward and land from inside the pocket. This makes him more susceptible to being hit and Golovkin can take full advantage of this, being one of the most devastating punchers in the sport.

Golovkin has a powerful jab that he can use to keep the charging Derevychenko on the outside and control the center of the ring. Golovkin is also a pressure fighter that is known for stalking his opponents and cutting off the ring to win fights. Derevyanchenko will need to use head and body movement to not be a stationary target that Golovkin can break down throughout the rounds. Derevyanchenko is an active fighter that throws a lot of punches and Golovkin will need to remain focused in order to outwork an opponent that can push the pace. There are some holes in Derevyanchenko’s defense that Golovkin can exploit. This will be the toughest opponent that Derevyanchenko has ever faced and has only lost to Daniel Jacobs by split decision. One of the reasons that he had success against Jacobs is because they were once sparring partners, making Derevyanchenko familiar with Jacob’s style before ever stepping into the ring to face him.

Fanduel Boxing Pick Gennady Golovkin vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko

In his most recent fight against Jack Culcay in April of 2019, Derevyanchenko outworked and out landed his opponent to get the decision. But, he was exposed as Culcay was able to connect against Derevyanchenko with some powerful punches to the head. If those same type of shots land for Golovkin it will likely be the end of the fight for him. Golovkin is coming off a 4th Round KO win over Steve Rolls in June of 2019. Golovkin did get hit with some shots early in the fight, but quickly ended the fight in the 4th with a left hook to the chin. Golovkin’s power and precision is often the difference in his fights. Golovkin should work the body of Derevyanchenko in order to soften up his opponent and dissuade him from charging forward.

This should be an exciting fight between two pressure fighters. Golovkin’s superior fundamentals, power, size, experience and reach advantage should help him get the win. If Golovkin looks impressive a trilogy fight against Canelo Alvarez could happen in 2020. Golovkin may not have the best defense, but he has a strong chin and is always a knockout threat. If Derevyanchenko puts the pressure on Golovkin then he will likely get picked apart from close range. It should be a competitive fight that is full of action, but Golovkin is just a class above his tough opponent.
