Fight odds: Sergey Kovalev -180 Anthony Yarde +150

Fanduel Boxing Pick Sergey Kovalev vs. Anthony Yarde

Sergey Kovalev will face Anthony Yarde in a WBO Light Heavyweight Title fight. Kovalev is 36, 6’0 and 175 lbs with a 72.44 inch reach. Yarde is 28, 6’0 and 175 lbs with a 72 inch reach. Kovalev is one of the best boxers in the division having fought some great fighters such as Bernard Hopkins, Jean Pascal and Andre Ward. Kovalev will look to build off his recent unanimous decision win over Eleider Alvarez. Yarde is an up and coming light heavyweight who has the potential to take the division by storm and has great power in both hands. Yarde has great punching power and can win a fight with one punch. Kovalev is a bully in the ring that takes advantage of a vulnerable opponent and often gets the win after exploiting an opponent’s weakness.

This is a great matchup between two fighters at different stages in their careers. The fight will take place in Russia giving Kovalev the home crowd advantage. Kovalev has a long reach and can use his powerful jab to keep the talented Yarde at bay. Since getting stopped by Eleider Alvarez in the 7th Round, Kovalev made the necessary adjustments to avenge that loss in the rematch with a dominant decision win over Alvarez in February of 2019. Kovalev looks rejuvenated and ready to take on Yarde. Yarde is coming off a 5th Round knockout win over Travis Reeves and has yet to truly be tested as a professional. Yarde will want to work the body and look for combinations to hurt a durable Kovalev.

Kovalev is a talented boxer that has the advantage in experience, ring fundamentals and overall skill level. Yarde has the slight advantage in speed and age and has less punishment and miles on his body which could prove crucial in the later rounds. If Kovalev gets into a brawl during this fight he could get caught by a big right hand from Yarde that could compromise him. However, if Kovalev uses his boxing effectively and uses defensive punches, like jabs and straight right hands then he should get the decision win. The key for Kovalev is not to get caught against the ropes as Yarde has proven to be an excellent finisher with 17 of his 18 wins coming by knockout.

Fanduel Boxing Pick Sergey Kovalev vs. Anthony Yarde

Kovalev is the toughest opponent Yarde has faced by far and this step up in competition will prove whether or not Yarde is ready for more big fights in his promising career. It is unlikely that Yarde will win on points in Kovalev’s native Russia and should look for the knockout in the later rounds to try and get a huge win over one of the great light heavyweights of this generation. Kovalev is also a great finisher 28 of his 33 wins coming by knockout. If Kovalev can wear Yarde down and connect with some combinations he could stop him before the final bell. Kovalev should be able to control the center of the ring and dictate most aspects of the fight. Kovalev needs to work the body and head of Yarde as he has proven to be a tough fighter to hurt with just one punch.

This is an exceptional matchup because it features a young big puncher in Yarde that is knocking everyone out against a grizzled veteran in Kovalev who is also a big puncher that is looking for another win as he looks to unify the Titles in future bouts. As long as Kovalev fights a disciplined fight he should get the win and further cement his legacy as a great light heavyweight. Kovalev was rumored to fight Canelo Alvarez and if he looks great against Yarde, perhaps that fight could still happen. This should be an exciting Title fight, but ultimately the fundamentals and experience that Kovalev possess should garner him a decision win.
