Fanduel Boxing Pick Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs
Canelo Alvarez will fight Daniel Jacobs in a unification bout at 160 pounds. Alvarez holds the WBA and WBC middleweight titles, while Jacobs holds the IBF middleweight title. The fight is being billed as a bout between the two best middleweights in boxing. While Jacobs and Canelo are two of the best middleweights in boxing, Gennady Golovkin has to feel slighted by this promotion as he has fought both fighters in the past. Golovkin beat Jacobs in a close decision win. Golovkin fought twice against Canelo, one draw and one loss. In the eyes of the public he definitely won the first fight and while the second fight was closer, the decision could’ve gone Golovkin’s way. But, both decisions were in the favor of Canelo, further cementing his status as the biggest star in boxing. Both Canelo and Golovkin signed with DAZN and it is possible they could meet a third time.
The fight between Canelo and Jacobs will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This is the same arena where Canelo got two controversial decisions against Golovkin. To make matters worse for Jacobs the three judges scoring the bout are Glenn Feldman, Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld. These are the same judges that scored the second Canelo-Golovkin fight. Jacobs will need the performance of his life to get a decision win over Canelo in Las Vegas.
Jacobs has solid fundamentals and only has two losses in his career. One by decision to Golovkin and one by knockout in 2010 to Dmitry Pirog. Perhaps the most amazing part of Jacobs’ journey is that the toughest fight he has faced has been outside the ring. After being diagnosed with bone cancer in his spine and undergoing a risky surgery, doctors told him he would never be able to fight again. Jacobs has come back to reach the pinnacle of the sport and fight the best middleweights in the division. Its a truly inspiring comeback story fitting of his nickname, “Miracle Man.” Jacobs is coming off a split decision win over Serhiy Derevianchenko in October of 2018. It was a close fight against a very tough and game opponent. Jacobs showed great boxing skill and grit to get through a tough fight and come out the victor. Jacobs won the vacant IBF Middleweight Title after beating Derevianchenko, setting up this big fight against Canelo.
Draftking Boxing Pick Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs
Canelo is coming off a 3rd round knockout in December 2018 over an overmatched Rocky Fielding in a fight contested at 168 pounds. Jacobs has the height and reach advantage over Canelo, standing at 5’11 with a 73 inch reach. Canelo stands at 5’9 with a 70.5 inch reach. This should be a competitive fight that goes to a decision. Canelo has the advantage in speed and punching power. He is a great counter puncher and utilizes great head movement to stay out of range of oncoming punches.
Jacobs will need to use his jab and take the openings against a hard to hit opponent. Canelo is capable of finishing fights with either a head or body punch. Jacobs will need to be aware of those body shots and use his footwork to set up his offense. Both fighters are great at both offense and defense, but Canelo is just a little better. This should be a great fight and there should be some back and forth action. The work rate of Canelo may just end up being too much for Jacobs to keep up with over the course of 12 Rounds.
