Fanduel Boxing Pick Gennady Golovkin vs. Steve Rolls

Gennady Golovkin will face Steve Rolls in a middleweight matchup. Golovkin will be making his debut on DAZN and his return to the ring since losing by majority decision to Canelo Alvarez. Golovkin made some changes to his preparation for the fight following the loss. Golovkin left his longtime trainer, Abel Sanchez and is now with Johnathon Banks. Sanchez claims Golovkin came with a low ball offer to continue training him after he signed a 6 fight, $100 million dollar contract with DAZN. Sanchez stated,“FYI, as of today I will no longer be working with Gennady Golovkin. After a great 9-year run, records set and equaled, developing a Hall of Fame career and making it possible to sign a six-fight, $100 million contract with DAZN, he proposed and insisted on an insulting new trainer compensation schedule. My dignity and honor does not allow me to be screwed like that. It’s unfortunate being greedy, being ungrateful and no ethics, honor or integrity will end this relationship.” It is unfortunate that such a great pairing had to end because of money disputes.

Golovkin and his new trainer Banks have been working on some new wrinkles and it will be interesting to see how Golovkin looks in his return to the ring. Golovkin is one of the hardest punching middleweights in boxing history. Working behind a powerful jab and a hunt down, forward style Golovkin is an intimidating force inside the ring. Golovkin can finish fights with either head or body shots. Golovkin is a pressure fighter that pushes forward always looking to gain an advantage. Rolls will need to use head movement and side to side steps to avoid big shots from Golovkin. This should be a statement fight where Golovkin announces himself as back and ready for a 3rd fight against Canelo Alvarez.

Draftking Boxing Pick Gennady Golovkin vs. Steve Rolls

Golovkin will look to push the pace and overpower Rolls. Rolls is a decent inside fighter with solid defensive skills. With combinations and decent speed, Rolls is not just a pushover opponent. Rolls can close the distance and perhaps make Golovkin fight on the defensive. But, it takes a top boxer to really test Golovkin. With great fundamentals and ring generalship, Golovkin always seems to be on balance and looking for that knockout shot. Expect this to be a competitive fight, with Golovkin’s power taking over midway through the rounds. This will be a huge step up in competition for Rolls and will be by far his best opponent. Rolls will want to use his big overhand right to keep Golovkin at a distance. Golovkin is excellent at judging distance and doesn’t throw wild punches. An accurate and powerful puncher, Golovkin should get the finish against a big underdog. If Golovkin can control the center of the ring and use his jab to snap Rolls’ head back then he should be able to set up his bigger shots in what should be an exciting fight.

Pick: Gennady Golovkin by 4th Round KO
