PGA TOUR Expert Picks At The Northern Trust 08-08-2019

The first event of the revamped FedExCup Playoffs kicks off this week at Liberty National in Jersey City, NJ. This is the first year with 3 playoff events instead of 4. The top 70 players after The Northern Trust will advance to the BMW Championship, and the final 30 advance to the TOUR Championship. Tiger Woods, who won the TOUR Championship last year, makes his first appearance since The Open Championship, and world number one Brooks Koepka tees it up for the first time since his win at the FedEx St. Jude.

Bryson Dechambeau won this tournament a year ago, but this is the first time the FedExCup Playoffs have been at Liberty National since The Barclays in 2013. Adam Scott won that event, and several big names finished tied for 2nd: Tiger Woods, Gary Woodland and Justin Rose among others. Rose won the FedExCup playoffs last year, and Tiger finished 2nd when the playoffs were played here in 2009. Liberty National also hosted the 2017 Presidents Cup where the Americans emphatically defeated the Internationals 19-11.

Key Stats: Liberty National

Although there is a small sample size of data at Liberty National, the course has favored ball strikers. It is a long course at 7,370 yards and just a par 71. There are 90 bunkers and 10 water hazards so there will be a premium on controlling the ball off the tee. Adam Scott, who won here in 2013, has noted that the greens are trickier than they look, so scrambling and greens in regulation will be important as well.

The key stats to watch this week when setting your lineups are:

  • Strokes Gained (SG) Approach
  • SG Tee to Green
  • Greens in Regulation percentage
  • Scrambling
  • Par 4 scoring
  • Par 5 scoring
