The Auburn Tigers and the Oregon Ducks meet in Arlington, Texas to kick off their 2019 college football season. Both teams are ranked inside the top 25 with Oregon sliding in at 11 and Auburn sitting comfortably at 16. The last time these two teams met was in January of 2011 at the BCS national-championship game. Cam Newton led the Tigers to their second national championship in school history that night by beating the Ducks 22-19. Almost 9 years later and these two schools have their sights set on another national-championship game appearance. Tonight’s game will be a major first step towards reaching that goal for whoever emerges victorious in the game. Auburn has kicked off their season twice in the state of Texas before. They are 2-0 in those games, beating Houston in 1963 and TCU in 1980. However, both Auburn and Oregon have found little success when kicking off the season against a ranked opponent. The Tigers are 2-6 all time when opening against a ranked opponent while the Ducks are 2-11 when starting the season against a ranked opponent. Oregon has a couple notable returning starters in the likes of LB Troy Dye, QB Justin Herbert, and RB CJ Verdell. Dye has been Oregon’s leading tackler the past couple seasons and Herbert is one of the top quarterback prospect for the 2020 NFL draft. Herbert threw for 3,151 yards and Verdell ran for 1,018 yards last season. All three players will play a major role in tonight’s game if Oregon were to win.
