UFC Fight Night Pick Colby Covington vs. Robbie Lawler

The UFC will return to New Jersey with a solid fight card. In the Co-Main Event Jim Miller will fight Clay Guida. This is a good matchup of veterans between two exciting fighters. Miller is 35, 5'8, 155 lbs with a 71 inch reach. Guida is 37, 5'7, 155 lbs with a 70 inch reach. Miller is a solid veteran with a great career having fought some of the best in the sport. Since 2014, Miller has lost 8 times and run up against some tough opponents showing that he is past his prime and can’t get the wins needed to fight for a Title shot. Miller lost to Dustin Poirier and Anthony Pettis by decision and lost to Charles Oliveira by 1st Round submission via rear-naked choke.

Miller is a short, compact fighter with solid power in the stand up exchanges. Miller is more comfortable wrestling and working his submission game. With 30 career wins, 16 have come by submission and 4 by knockout. Miller holds the record for most wins in UFC lightweight division (155 lbs) history, with 30. Miller will look to get the better of the stand up exchanges and shoot for takedowns when they are available. Miller is coming off a win in April of 2019 against Jason Gonzalez. Miller got the win with a 1st Round submission via rear-naked choke. Miller took the back of Gonzalez and his superior grappling took over as he locked in the choke and submitted a taller opponent.

His opponent, Clay Guida won’t be as easy to submit. Miller is going up against a tough opponent who is also a wrestler. Clay Guida is a ferocious mover that fights with a lot of energy and has great cardio. Guida has 35 career wins, 13 have come by submission and 7 by knockout. Guida is coming off a unanimous decision victory over B.J. Penn in May of 2019. Guida uses perpetual motion and side to side head movement to keep his opponent off balance. This makes Guida hard to time and can be difficult to hit. Guida likes to use feints to set up his takedowns or his strikes. Guida can also attack the legs of Miller with effective kicks that will wear down Miller’s base.

Guida utilized his superior speed and grappling to beat a 40 year old B.J. Penn. Along with Miller, Guida also lost to Charles Oliveira by 1st Round submission via guillotine choke. Guida should win this fight against Miller because of his advantage in speed and cardio. Miller is a strong fighter, but may tire more than Guida as the fight progresses. Both fighters are excellent wrestlers and their grappling skills may cancel each other out resulting in a majority of the fight being contested on the feet.
