Fanduel Bellator 232 Pick Rory MacDonald vs. Douglas Lima 2

Rory MacDonald will fight Douglas Lima in the Bellator Welterweight World Grand Prix Final. This is a rematch as they fought previously in January of 2018. Both fighters earned their way to the Final and the winner will have the Bellator Welterweight Championship and win 1 million dollars. MacDonald won their first fight by unanimous decision in what was a close and competitive fight. Lima did well to weaken the legs of MacDonald with powerful kicks. MacDonald countered this with strong takedowns and used his wrestling to get the tough decision win.

MacDonald is 30, 6’0 and 169.25 lbs with a 76 inch reach. Lima is 31, 6’1 and 169.25 lbs with a 74.5 inch reach. Lima has improved and looked impressive since his loss to MacDonald. Following the loss, Lima submitted Andrey Koreshkov in the 5th Round with a rear-naked choke. This was a great accomplishment as Koreshkov is a decent welterweight that had beat Lima by decision in 2015. Lima followed up that win with a 2nd Round KO of Michael Page. Page is one of the more dynamic strikers in Bellator, but was perhaps over-confident going into his fight against Lima. Lima caught Page with a right hand followed up by a leg kick that made Page fall to the canvas. Page didn’t defend well and Lima got the brutal knockout win after landing another big right on the head of Page as he was getting back up from the leg kick.

Fanduel Bellator 232 Pick Rory MacDonald vs. Douglas Lima 2

MacDonald is unlikely to meet the same fate as Page, but will no doubt need to defend those leg kicks to avoid taking too much damage. MacDonald has proven to be durable in the past and has championship heart. Since beating Lima, MacDonald lost to Gegard Mousasi by 2nd Round TKO. MacDonald moved up in weight to Middleweight (185 lbs) in an attempt to become the double champion. While his attempt was unsuccessful, MacDonald has not lost at Welterweight (170 lbs). Since losing to Mousasi, MacDonald put in an uninspired effort against MMA veteran, Jon Fitch. The bout was ruled a draw and MacDonald was lucky to still escape with his Title.

MacDonald is coming off a unanimous decision win over Neiman Gracie in June of 2019. MacDonald put in a better effort against Gracie and beat the famed grappler at his own game. MacDonald proved to be the better striker against Gracie who was going into the fight undefeated with 8 submission wins in 9 fights. MacDonald fought off his submission attempts and showed why he is such a well rounded fighter, able to win a fight on the feet or on the ground. While Lima has had the better performances since losing to MacDonald, the fight could still go MacDonald’s way. If Lima can’t get the explosive knockout then MacDonald will most likely get the decision as he is the current champion and has a complete MMA game. The biggest adjustment MacDonald will want to make in the re-match will be defending the leg kicks better. For Lima it will be defending the takedowns of MacDonald and attempting to keep a majority of the fight on the feet.
