News broke today that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games will be postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping the world.
Veteran International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound, told USA Today Sports, that the 2020 Tokyo Games would definitely be postponed and theres no way around it.
“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided. The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”
Pound has been one of the most influential and decorated members of the IOC for decades and predicts the games will be moved to 2021. The details of the postponement will be released over the next four weeks.
“It will come in stages. We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense.”
Neither the IOC nor the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee had announced a decision to postpone as of Monday afternoon. Pound, being a lifer to the IOC, is well respected and apparently very trustworthy. The Olympics would be the most significant sporting event to date to fall victim to the coronavirus.
